engines_f414_400.jpgF414-400, which provides 22,000 lbs. of thrust and was produced for the Saab JAS 39 Gripen Demonstrator, is the most advanced turbofan engine in its class. Here is an overview of one of the newest and most advanced technology fighter engine in production.

The production of this engine started in late 1998 after a highly successful Engineering and Manufacturing Development program that was completed on time and on budget.

The F414-GE-400 turbofan builds upon the excellent reliability, operability and readiness of the F404 engine. The combat-proven F414 has delivered excellent reliability and 35 percent more thrust than the original F404.

Advanced technology features such as a Full Authority Digital Electronic Control (FADEC) improve operational characteristics of the engine while the latest materials and cooling techniques allow for higher temperatures and pressures without sacrificing component life.

The F414G provides 22,000 lbs. of thrust and was firstly produced for the Saab JAS 39 Gripen Demonstrator, and was recently selected by Switzerland for the Gripen NG.

So the Gripen 39E will not use any F414G EPE or F414G EDE?

Thats correct, Gripen E will not use F414G EPE or F414G EDE it will have the engine called F414-GE-39E.

Can you explain to me the reason not going the extra step by picking the 414 EPE engine? From what I find it does produce an extra 4400 pounds of thrust that would be a welcome addition not least at altitude? Is the EPE a possible future upgrade or does the 414G offer possibilities to cream out some more punch via updates in the future? Thanks in advance for answer!

”The Gripen NG is designed for the current mature version of the GE 414 but is capable of accommodating a GE414 growth version in the future. Which version of the 414 (EPE or other) will be determined depending on customer requirements”
